76-Year-Old Father Critically Injured After Attacked by Son in Los Banos

Los Banos, CA (April 9, 2026) — A 37-year-old man was arrested Wednesday night after a stabbing in a residential neighborhood left his 76-year-old father in critical condition, according to the Los Banos Police Department.

Officers were dispatched at approximately 9:18 p.m. on April 8 to the 300 block of North Street following reports of a fight in front of a home. When officers arrived, they found two individuals on the ground, including an elderly man suffering from multiple stab wounds described as life-threatening.

Police identified the suspect as 37-year-old Gabriel Ortiz, who was taken into custody at the scene without further incident.

According to investigators, the victim had been speaking with a neighbor when he was suddenly attacked by Ortiz, identified as his son. During the assault, a nearby resident witnessed the incident and intervened, ordering Ortiz to the ground and holding him there until officers arrived.

Authorities said the victim was airlifted to a Modesto-area hospital, where he remains in critical condition and continues to receive treatment. His identity has not been publicly released.

The Los Banos Police Department commended the neighbor who intervened, stating their actions played a critical role in stopping the attack and preventing further harm.
